Yes, cogently argued. Prime Minister Maydogan seems concerned at very modest opposition which is precisely what Her Majesty’s opposition should be doing. People seem to think it is a forgone conclusion and it probably is. But look out for complacency and the impact of the latest round of cuts on millions of people. Turnout may be quite low so soon after the local elections.
If the opposition parties can get their emotional arguments together and not try and bore people to death with facts, who knows?
An interesting article that questions the legality of the Election but for me the most important message is that May’s calling of an election should be seen as the attempt for power grabbing exercise that it is and is a real blow for democracy. Just as Parliament had been showing itself to be flexing it’s muscles as a democratic institution by opposing some of her Governments more extreme policies, she decides that she doesn’t like such opposition, so she decides to try to strengthen the hand of the Executive over Parliament. An increased Tory majority, representing probably around 30% of eligible voters given our electoral system, will give the Executive far more power over Parliament enabling them to ignore opposition. Democracy takes a backward step.
The Guardian article indicates that a progressive alliance is unlikely in this election. Gina Miller who challenged the Government in the courts over allowing Parliament a vote on BREXIT, has launched a campaign to encourage tactical voting for those candidates who favour a meaningful vote for MPs over the terms of BREXIT when they are finally worked out. This may be the best that we progressives can hope for from the election given the refusal of Labour of the Lib Dems to cooperate with the Greens in an anti-Tory alliance. The article about Gina Miller’s campaign is here: https://www.theguardian.com/politics/2017/apr/19/gina-miller-best-for-britain-tactical-voting-against-hard-brexit
Compass also has a tactical voting machine up and running but when I entered my post code it pointed out that Glen has a majorly of more than 20,000 and that in those circumstances, and with Labour coming second last time in Salisbury, my best bet would be to campaign and vote for Labour rather than try tactical voting.
Hold that thought! Compass is now calling Salisbury a Progressive Marginal and is now recommending that we campaign for a progressive party rather than simply Labour. The website is at http://www.progressivealliance.org.uk At the last election Labour came second and UKIP third. But of course the Lib Dems are recovering strongly.
