HERE’S and interesting article dug out by Steve Webster which relates to a discussion we were having last night at a meeting of Salisbury For Europe.
Also relevant to this question is an excellent book by Hugo Mercier and Dan Sperber called The Enigma of Reason, which featured in and article I wrote for this website called Where is reason? In it they seek to topple logic from its pedestal and place reason in its proper evolutionary place with all its bias and laziness.
The authors write: “In our interactionist account, reason’s bias and laziness aren’t flaws; they are features that help reason fulfil its function…Reason properly understood as a tool for social interaction is certainly not perfect, but flawed it is not.”
It is this view of reason, I believe, that forms one of the building blocks of Salisbury Democracy Café.
